I Smell Snow! Fictional Festivals, Snow on Screen, and Holiday Hops
This December, we're brrrrr-inging wintry wonder!
The end of the year is a great time for fandom: from big holiday blockbuster movies premiering in theaters, to nostalgic films on broadcast and streaming and of course made-for-TV holiday romances, things just feel a little more…festive. It’s the perfect season for watching your faves: the year is winding down, and that gives us more time for indulging in cozy content and epic stories. Speaking of…
Did you spend your Thanksgiving weekend watching the first volume of Strange Things 5? We sure did! All through November, we dedicated content here at rmrk*st to the series that will keep us guessing through the end of the year (literally: the last ep drops right along with the Times Square ball on New Year’s Eve!). In anticipation of the final season, we prepared a Stranger Things toolkit you’d definitely need if you were to venture to the Upside Down. On a more serious note, we explored how the series uses retro technology to create suspense, ground the characters in a place and time, and to propel the story forward. We also looked at the movies and culture of the 1980s that inspired the Duffer Brothers to create many elements of the show. Of course, we couldn’t talk about the series without pulling together some of the biggest fan theories and predictions about the final season. Were we right about any of these? We’ll find out in a few short weeks!
In addition, we hope you didn’t miss our exclusive interview with Dragonfly Merch Co., a small business whose merch is quickly becoming iconic amongst fans. The shop designs and creates clothing and other novelties inspired by both Gilmore Girls and Psych, and at least one of their designs serves as a hint for December theme here at rmrk*st. Have you guessed it yet?
This December, we are excited to round out our celebration of the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Gilmore Girls with an homage: our theme is I Smell Snow, a nod to Lorelai Gilmore’s most famous line. But we’re taking it further, and will be exploring winter themes in fandom. Expect pieces on fictional winter holidays in the stories we love, epic holiday parties in fandom, and the evolution of the appearance of snow on film. Also, look out for some surprises from guests to rmrk*st Magazine.
Our Table of Contents is below. We hope you’re ready for the coziest season and most importantly, looking forward to celebrating with your favorite holiday movies and TV shows.
