May 2023 | rmrk*st | Remarkist Magazine

As Justin Timberlake once said, “it’s gonna be May.” And guess what? It is! And have we got a May cover reveal for you!

Throughout the month, we’ll be bringing you fannish content that’s, well, out of this world . Which is fitting, because May is home to the Star Wars May the Fourth holiday, for starters.

April was a great month here at rmrk*st. (And that rebrand design we promised last month? We may have been having a bit of April Fool’s fun. 😉) If you missed any of April’s fan content though, don’t skip the recap! Never skip the recap…In April 2023, we celebrated all aspects of the modern watch party with the Watch Party Issue! At Remarkist, all aspects of fandom are near and dear to us, but watch parties? It’s the activity that brought our community together when we started a Gilmore Girls watch party 📺 in April of 2021 (where does the time go?!), and it’s the backbone of everything we do on the Remarkist platform. We explored a brief history of the art of the watch party, from in-person watch parties of yesterday 📽 to the online watch parties that combine modern technology 🎧 with an age-old tradition: enjoying content together. 🍿

At Remarkist, we’ve enjoyed many series and movies together, including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. To celebrate the show’s fifth and final season, we went back into our watch party recording ⏺ archives and highlighted community insights from each season leading up to now. Creator content is part of the watch party, and this month’s Memento Insights reflect that. And in addition to a Maisel-themed Memento Insight, we dropped the next four installments of our Star Wars-themed fan fiction Memento Insights series. Mementos from the series are still available in the Remarkist app–claim them while you can!

Social media has impacted the watch party phenomenon in many ways. Community member

Hunter Boyle
wrote about her experience as a Game of Thrones reaction video creator and illustrated how the reactor community has propelled the online watch party format forward and impacted the fandoms within them. In a look at inter-generational watch parties, we marveled at how a classic book 📘 by the incomparable Judy Blume has inspired three generations of fans. As Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret becomes a film adaptation, it’s an opportunity for grandmothers, mothers, and daughters to connect over the same content.

Watch parties are also a perfect place to introduce games! 🎲 And to that end, we launched our Schitt’s Creek-themed Tournament of Wigs, a bracket-style competition where fans decide which is Moira Rose’s Wackiest Wig! During our watch party of Season 5 of Schitt’s Creek, we played the Tournament of Threads featuring David’s amazing sweaters, so it was fitting to bring a similar competition back for our Slate watch of the 6th and final season of the show! And it’s not too late to get in on the voting: Just head to John Cabrera’s Instagram stories to vote ☑️ each week on the wigs you love the most. And speaking of voting, we’d love to hear how you feel about our list of the 15 Most Devoted Fandoms! Did we get it right? What fandoms do you think we missed? We want to hear from you about YOUR favorite fandoms.

May is flowering…with content! 🌸

Get ready for some out-of-this-world fannish content here at rmrk*st. May the Fourth is, of course, a big Star Wars holiday. We’ll be celebrating in style with a May the Fourth surprise and we also will be dropping more Memento Insights that add to the serialized fan fiction our franchise watch party hosts have been creating. (Join us on May 4th on the Remarkist app for an epic watch party of Episode VIII: The Force Awakens, as well as the rest of our Slate watch party series as we watch the last trilogy!)

The Star Wars storyworld is rich for exploration. Another storyworld with a seemingly endless amount of content? Marvel. And with the newest Guardians of the Galaxy film out in May, we are psyched to see what Peter Quill and the gang are up to in Vol. 3.

Did you ever wish you could be part of another world, a world so different from your own that everything about it, even the most mundane objects associated with it🍴, are fascinating? That is the well-known theme of The Little Mermaid. And as the highly anticipated live action film hits the big screen, we’ll be there. 🧜‍♀️

We hope you’ll come along and continue to share our articles and click that heart ❤️ button on the ones you love. We also want to hear from you if you’d like to submit a Memento Insight or write for us! And if you’re not following us on Instagram and Tumblr, what are you waiting for?! We love to feature IG fan art on our Stories; tag us in your creations for a possible re-post on our Fan Art Fridays!

So check out our Table of Contents below! We’ll be updating the list throughout the month!
