Tabletop Gaming, 90s Board Games, Classic Games Reimagined, and a New Fandom Challenge
Join us this January for a celebration of tabletop games!
Happy New Year, fans! 🎊 Are you all set with your New Year’s resolutions? Ours is to celebrate all fandoms in new and exciting ways! As we embark on a new year, we look forward to new adventures in fandom. It’s hard to believe how 2023 flew by–but not without carving some serious dents into pop culture. It was, among other things, the year of Barbie and Taylor Swift–and we celebrated here at rmrk*st accordingly. So what can we expect to grace our screens in 2024? We can hardly wait to find out!
Before we take a look at what’s happening here at rmrk*st Magazine this January, let’s turn the clock back ↩️ a bit to last year…er, December. We dedicated the month to toys 🧸 and holiday fun–and we had a blast!
At Remarkist, our app users participated in a virtual craft market–just like the real-life ones that we love attending during the holiday season. Our Joyful Markit was a weeklong carnival of Memento creation and Memento gift-giving 🎁 in the spirit of Christmas and Hanukkah, complete with prizes! In addition, our holiday watch party Slate featured Hallmark holiday movies, classic favorites, and series.
With Christmas 🎄 and Hanukkah 🕎 typically so focused on gifts for kids, our monthly magazine theme was inspired by toys. We took a look at some specific toy fandoms, like American Girl, as well as some iconic toys featured in holiday movies.
Since our Holiday Slate was heavily dedicated to Hallmark holiday movies, we thought we’d have fun with AI and asked ChatGPT help us write a few Hallmark-like holiday movie plots for films we’d be psyched to watch. The results were extremely entertaining.
While Gilmore Girls season is undoubtedly the fall, we put together the most wintry episodes ❄️ to keep you cozy through the spring! One of those episodes features the Bracebridge Dinner, of course–and that’s just one of the holiday parties in fandom we wish we could attend that we compiled on this list. And speaking of parties: we compiled a roster of characters we would definitely invite to our Hanukkah celebrations!
But now that New Year’s celebrations are over and we’ve cleaned up all the confetti, we’re looking ahead! It’s time to show our hand ♦️♠️♥️♣️ (see what we did there?) on the theme for January. We are getting back to the basics of gaming: tabletop and board games! 🎲 We’ll dive into the world of analog games that have inspired many fandoms–from card games, role playing tabletop games and the earliest party board games–to the board games we love turned into movies. Board games and nostalgia go hand in hand, and they foster community–just like our favorite fandoms. Head over to our Discord’s gaming-forums channel to find other fans of the games you love! And while this month we’re celebrating tabletop games, don’t worry if you’re a video game aficionado: we’ll be covering video gaming in a future issue!
