Gilmore Girls Day, Cast Interviews, The Writer’s Room, Pride, and The Tonys
We have 1000 yellow daisies’ worth of Gilmore Girls content coming your way this June!
“Winter, spring, summer or…” We’ve reached the halfway point of a Carole King song’s chorus, friends! In leaving May behind and jumping into June, we are so excited about what’s to come here at rmrk*st (and spoiler alert: that “You’ve Got a Friend” reference is a hint! 🌼).
But first, let’s reach back in time like an 80s mixtape and reflect on the past a bit, shall we? Last month’s content took us out of this world 🌎 and into other fictional ones worth exploring on land 🏖, sea 🌊, and in space 🚀!
We continued—and completed—our community slate watch of Star Wars! At rmrk*st, we celebrated May the Fourth with a launch of a Star Wars-themed emoji puzzle game that anyone can play at any time! Channeling group project vibes from our school days, the talented group of event hosts for the Star Wars franchise slate watch collaborated on a fan fiction serial ✍️ in the form of Memento drops: each watch party event has a Memento attached with a piece of an original fan fiction story in the Memento description. May 2023 was a big month for big franchises and blockbuster movie releases in theaters. The third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy inspired our piece on motion capture used in the movies 🎥 over the past fifty years. And the release of the live action film version of The Little Mermaid 🧜♀️ prompted a look back into the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s and the rise of princess culture 👸.
Speaking of the 90s, nostalgia took over as we celebrated teen TV drama soundtracks 🎧 from the 90s/early 2000s that you might have forgotten about. We celebrated moms and motherhood with a piece on classic films to watch for Mother’s Day–though we maintain that this list is great for movie nights 🍿 all year round! And forever exploring different aspects of fandom, we did a deep dive into what it means to playfully roast the shows and movies we love–making fun of them in the most loving of ways.
Now that you’re prepared for our June issue… well, hold it right there because we’re going to dive deep into more nostalgia! Let’s start at the beginning: the story 📖 of Remarkist begins with a single franchise fandom–Gilmore Girls. In April of 2021, a group of fans sat down with former Gilmore Girls cast member John Cabrera (who had never actually seen the show) to embark on a watch 👀 of the whole series. Through live watch parties and episode discussions 🗣, a community formed. John looked to fans to usher him through a watch of the series and clue him in on fan theories, interpretations, fandom favorite moments and episodes, character ‘ships and Teams. And of course, fandom holidays.
Any true Gilmore Girls fan knows that while the show thrives on New England-ish fall vibes—color-changing leaves 🍂 and cozy coffee ☕️ moments—a specifically important date within the franchise is June 3rd. So here at Remarkist, we plan to celebrate Gilmore Girls throughout June! It’s our now-precious tradition: in June 2022, we celebrated the first year of Remarkist with the Super Sensational Summer Spectacular, a month-long celebration with episode watches and Fireside Chats with special guests like former cast and crew members, podcasters 🎙 and influencers. We also had trivia sessions, Jukebox Jams sessions, a charity project, and a memorabilia auction of items from John Cabrera’s personal collection.
We can’t believe it’s been a year since that epic month of events, so we are revisiting it this June with reflections on the Fireside Chats 🔥 we had with cast and crew, the rare Mementos that some of our special guests dropped during their visits with our community, and a new Gilmore Girls-themed game 🎲 you can play throughout the month, or any time! In short, the content you find here this month will be mostly dedicated to the show that ignited the Remarkist app, community, and fandom zine we have proudly built together. In addition, look out for exclusive games and content on our Instagram!
June is also a month that shimmers with the spirit of love, acceptance, and equality. It's Pride Month! 🏳️🌈 And our community is leading the charge on those festivities with several watches and events to celebrate all of that pride and joy.
