Happy August, everyone! It’s hard to believe we’re in the home stretch of the season. We hope you’ve been enjoying blockbuster movies, beach reading, and highly anticipated album drops as you narrow down any contenders for Song of the Summer.
We’re excited to bring you this month’s theme. But before we get there, let’s take a look at what you might have missed in July. Our theme was Curation, for the fans that love to categorize, make lists, and build canon.
In the age of streaming, we examined how fans collect physical media when digital copies of our favorite shows, movies, books and music prove to be convenient but fleeting. Speaking of collections, we dove into how building music playlists around our favorite content can expand fictional worlds and extend their reach beyond the screen. And, we looked at how recommendation lists–both editorial and fan-generated–build communities, especially around specific fannish groups.
Raise your hand if you’re going to see your favorite band this August, or finalizing plans to go to a convention this fall. Because if you are, our August theme is for you. We will be publishing content around the idea of Devotion: how we practice dedication to a thing we love in all different ways. Devoted fans patronize the vast plethora of content available to us, and keep those franchises and stories alive through dedicated passion.
We’ll look at the economics involved in being a superfan, whether or not you can be a quiet devotee of something, and how our allegiances can be tested by both artists and the art itself when things change for us or the content. We can’t wait to share our thoughts with you!
