Krizt froze. She had seen light beams like those before, recognized them to be of the elite guards and knew they were in trouble. She also realized, whoever the man was in the crate, this was a kind of trouble she should not have gotten involved with.
One of the figures quickly lowered his blue hood revealing a familiar face - an old acquaintance who had gone quiet years ago. Some thought he’d turned. Others thought he died.
Yet, here he was.
He whispered, “Krizt. We don't have much time.”
With that, he turned and sprinted towards the opposite end of the bay. His partner, still cloaked, started pushing the crate, and followed him. Krizt and Reena shared a look. Krizt could not comprehend how it was possible that he was here. A blaster hit on a container nearby jolted her body to action, and grabbing Reena's arm, they both ran after him.
It was a slower escape than she’d have liked. But clearly their rescue depended on rescuing the man-in-the-crate too. She couldn't shake the feeling that they were in even deeper trouble than she knew.
At the end of the bay, a small shuttle stood. Krizt’s heart sank as she saw that it was damaged, with exposed wires.
“Get on,” their ally said, helping his partner load the crate, and ushering them towards the cockpit. “It’s our only way out.”
Krizt hesitated, but with the sound of heavy footsteps coming towards them, there was no other choice. She climbed into the cockpit, Reena right behind her, and the ship’s engines puttered a bit before roaring to life. They lifted off just as the enemy guards burst forth, firing wildly at the craft.
Krizt gritted her teeth as they soared out of the ship’s bay doors, dodging floating debris and enemy fire. They were alive, but far from safe.
As she punched in the coordinates for their next destination - a location in the middle of nowhere - Krizt began to contemplate the quagmire she was in.
