"Come on, hurry!" Reena shouted above the blaring alarms, her voice barely audible over the chaos of the ship. She braced herself against the archway as her partner struggled to catch up. Another thunderous, energy surge raised the hair in their necks and the freighter shook again, throwing them both off balance. The older smuggler stumbled as she approached, catching herself on the edge of a console.
"I'm coming!" she yelled back, trying to pick up the pace. They needed to get through that door and seal it shut before the ship was breached. If they didn't make it in time, they were dead.
Another explosion rocked the freighter, and Krizt felt her heart race in her chest. Nearly 40 years making this run, and she had never experienced this kind of aggression before. Not out here. The fear was starting to grip her. What the hell were they smuggling that would bring the law to this edge of the galaxy? She could feel the cold beads of sweat on her forehead as she ran down the narrow hallway, dodging the gas clouds spewing from damaged pipes and knocking into the ship's groaning walls like a rag doll.
As she approached the door, Reena stepped aside then punched in the code, her boney fingers flying over the keypad. The steel door bellowed as it slid shut, and metal screeched against metal, almost drowning out the desperate warning system.
They were safe for a short while. But how long? Minutes maybe? Rena led the way down the darkened corridor. The sirens were a bit more muted here. She looked back at her partner with a contained dread. “What now?”
"That was… just the first wave," the old smuggler responded. “There are more on the way.”
“Then we’re going to have to fight if we want to survive this."
“Maybe not,” Krizt muttered to herself. They arrived at the cargo hold and stared in at a towering crate standing alone in the center of the space. “My guess is we won’t have to fight at all if we do this right.”
