This is so cool I came across this because I just wrote about Clueless myself and how it's one of my favourite comfort movies. Mean Girls and 10 Things I Hate About You are as well, I think the comedy is excellent in all of them. It's really interesting how centuries old source material can still be transformed into contemporary stories with social commentary of the time, for instance Clueless becoming a satire of 90s valley girls when it was originally a story about class hierarchy in Emma. That's the power of a timeless narrative structure.

Yes! I don’t think it’s a coincidence that some of those 90s/early 00s romcom classics were based on Shakespearean plays or Jane Austen novels…these story structures have been established for centuries and for good reason. I love that modern stories reinvent well-established tropes; it only makes me want to go read (or reread) those earlier texts.

This is cracking me up because I wrote a note for myself yesterday starting a list of "movies that always hit for me" and Clueless was number 1. Mean girls was also on it.

Perhaps a watch party or two are in order! Would love to deep dive why these movies really hit for us both with you!

I was thinking along the same lines. Let’s stay in touch. I have an idea that’s been ruminating for a few months for a fun piece of content.
