Back to Fandom: Rewatch Plans, Unexpected Reunions, and Fandom Identity
Studying the content that excites our imaginations
If you’re like us (or Rory Gilmore), you get giddy for back to school supplies in August as everyone prepares to head into autumn. But while the summer may be winding down to a close, but we’re not quite there yet! August is a time for the last looks of sun and salt air, beach reads, outdoor concerts, and afternoons at the movies. This August, we are excited to regroup before fall fandom vibes kick into high gear.
We’re still reeling from an action-packed July! Last month at rmrk*st, we dove headfirst into summer blockbuster culture: the movies, books, and giant fandom events that are typically reserved for the summer months. In honor of the much-anticipated movies of the season, we took a look at a brief history of the “summer blockbuster” phenomenon. One thing is for sure: as the summer blockbuster has evolved, so has the merch: these popcorn buckets and concession stand collabs are one the reasons we love going to the movies. We also celebrated the long-anticipated release of the newest Superman film with a look back at how Superman has been characterized over the past 70 years in various films and TV shows. And if you’re looking to head on vacation with a great book, we put together a list of big summer reads to choose from.
This August, we’re looking ahead to the biggest fandom moments coming this fall. And to that end, we want to help you regroup and prepare! It’s back to school time, and that’s the inspiration we drew from for this month’s theme: Back to Fandom! Over the next several weeks, we’ll be producing content here at rmrk*st that aims to bring you back into the fandom fold–whatever it may be. Think of it as a review course. We’ll help you with a rewatch plan of your favorite show before a new season hits streamers (we’re looking at you, Stranger Things), take a bit of a look back on the fandoms that helped you build your identity, and celebrate the reunions of your favorite characters and/or actors in new stories. We’ll even give you a reading list on fandom cultures to peruse. It’s like summer school, but for fandom.
Things are hitting an exciting stride in the Remarkist ecosystem too, so make sure you’re subscribed to rmrk*st Magazine so you never miss a thing! Our Discord is also where you can find regular updates about all things Remarkist; our invite link is open. And for more fandom content, follow us on Instagram, Threads and Tumblr!
Check out the following Table of Contents, a syllabus of sorts for future reading! And as always, we want to hear from you in the comments–seriously. Consider it a homework assignment.
