Summer Blockbusters, Superman, Theater Snacks and Big Books of the Season
Grab your fandom-branded popcorn bucket: you're in for some epic stories this summer!
Happy July! It’s officially summer, if you couldn’t tell from the massive heatwaves we’ve been experiencing! With summer comes seasonal traditions: vacations and pool days, frozen treats and backyard bbqs, and of course: big movies and other fandom events. We’re excited to dive into July content here at rmrk*st, but before we do, let’s take a look at everything we published in June.
June is always officially Pride, so last month we dedicated our content to all things LGBTQ in fandom. We wanted to shine a light on trans representation in pop culture both in narrative and casting, and we had a lot to choose from! These trans-led tv shows inspired us. When looking at the range of queer representation on TV shows, we took a look at modern shows that offer multi-dimensional representation, an evolution from the early 90s and 2000s that offered more stereotypical characters and storylines.
Since summer is a great time to take a book on vacation or to the beach, we didn’t want to leave you without a handy book list of new releases from memoirs to romance novels that center LGBTQ+ narratives. And, if you’re staying inside in your air conditioning during the sweltering months, we put together a smattering of video games that feature queer storylines and characters.
Speaking of staying inside to beat the heat…this month we will be digging into an American summer pastime: Summer Blockbusters! Since a certain movie starring a certain shark that terrorized a certain coastal town one summer fifty (yes, fifty!) years ago, the summer blockbuster movie has become a phenomenon. And it doesn’t just pertain to movies anymore: big summer books, concert tours, etc. tend to fall under the “blockbuster” umbrella. In short, summer is a great time for epic events in fandom.
We’ll be bringing you content that covers the highly anticipated Superman film coming in July 2025, and talking a bit more about superheroes and their relationship to the summer blockbuster. Since a lot of us will be hitting the movie theaters this summer, we’ll be hitting the snack bar pretty hard. What’s a theater-going experience without popcorn? Those most-enticipated blockbuster franchises know we love merch, so we’ll be taking a look at epic snack bar collaborations–like fun popcorn buckets and branded snacks–that feed the excitement around a summer blockbuster movie. Like we said, the concept of the summer blockbuster movie has been around for fifty years, so we will chart some of the history of the concept and some of the best blockbusters we still rewatch regularly. And finally, we’ll be bringing you a book list of must-reads to get you through the dog days of summer by the pool, on the beach, or sitting in front of your air conditioner.
