Tippecanoe and Save Ukraine's Zoos: Join Remarkist's first virtual charity challenge 🦓
Put your fandom knowledge and Ace-like sleuthing abilities to the test in a virtual scavenger hunt to support the Emergency Appeal for Ukrainian Zoos.
It’s been just over a year since Remarkist launched, and we’re getting ready for our most ambitious project yet: a month-long festival for fans of the tv series Gilmore Girls to celebrate with watch parties, games, prizes, and special cast appearances 🎉. And it all starts on June 3 (if you know, you know).
At Remarkist, we believe fandom isn’t just about being entertained; it’s about creating transformative projects and changing people’s lives for the better. That’s why we’ve formed a charity committee, dedicated to civic engagement, acts of service, and fundraising, all through the lens of our favorite shows, movies, and franchises.
To kick off our “Super Sensational Summer Spectacular” this June, Remarkist’s “Two Shoes” Charity Committee has created “The Great Animal Rescue”, a virtual scavenger hunt across three fictional maps to benefit the Emergency Appeal for Ukrainian Zoos. When Adam Ant asks “What do ya do?”, our answer is “Make elaborate scavenger hunts, I guess?”
The Story of “The Great Animal Rescue”
It’s summertime, and the Town has been eagerly awaiting the Grand Opening of the new Town Zoo. Unfortunately, the Town Selectman just discovered that the Town Man-child has let all the animals escape during his night shift! Now everyone is scrambling to fix this faunal fiasco.
The Man-child will be exploring three maps for their possible whereabouts: The Town, The City, and The University.
He’ll pin his notes to each along the way. Don't expect them to make much sense, but they might help you solve a series of puzzles in the Remarkist app 🧩 and win some prizes 🎁. Furthermore, the farther the animals wander, the more difficult it will be to find them. That’s to say, The Town map will have the easiest puzzles, while the University grounds will require you to dust off that old valedictorian’s hat 🎓.
To gain access to his maps and compete in “The Great Animal Rescue”, follow these instructions:
First off, you will need to be a Remarkist Member with an account in our app. Not signed up yet? Go here to learn how.
Once you have an account set up, participating in “The Great Animal Rescue” is pretty straightforward:
Make a donation to the Emergency Appeal for Ukrainian Zoos at EAZA’s official donation link: https://www.eaza.net/emergency-appeal-for-ukrainian-zoos/
“The Great Animal Rescue” will take place across three story maps: The Town, The City, and The University. You can choose to play one map or all three. (Note: Those who choose to play across all of the maps will have the chance to build a special-edition, grand Memento.)
The scavenger hunt will be playable with proof of a $4 USD donation per map. To play all three maps, you’ll need to donate at least $12 USD.
If you used PayPay, you will receive an email receipt from PayPal showing your EAZA donation. Forward that to charity@remarkist.com 📧. If you donated by credit card or bank, simply take a screenshot of your donation from your online banking/credit card transactions, and attach that to the email instead. In the body of the email, please include the following:
The map(s) you would like to play (i.e. “I’d like to play [the name of the map or maps]”.) You can choose up to three of the following: The Town, The City, and The University.
Your Remarkist app membername. If you don’t remember it, go to your Remarkist Profile in the app and find your membername in parentheses under your profile picture. For example, my membername is @sabrina.
Once you send us this email, we’ll send you back a reply with a password and instructions to claim one Starter Memento in the Remarkist app for each map you’ve requested. Give us a day or two to get you that info, though. We’re a scrappy team.
Owning those Starter Mementos will unlock hidden events in our app calendar taking place during “The Super Sensational Summer Spectacular.” During those events, we will unveil fandom puzzle challenges. With each puzzle you crack, you’ll receive another Memento that will unlock a subsequent hidden event in the calendar. That event will play host to a new puzzle in the sequence.
Complete all the Challenges on a given map over the month to win all of its Mementos and rescue its animals.
Check back often for new clues, and help our beloved Man-child fix this mess before it’s too late!
Important Details About Mementos
Remarkist community members usually create Mementos to release during watch parties and other events, and anyone can make them (even you). They’re really easy to make. Seriously.
Here’s an example of what a Memento looks like, complete with an explanation of the context behind it.
Our Memento Catalog is like a growing Pokedex, with hundreds of community-created Mementos representing dozens of story franchises. You can start building your own collection today to 🎵 be the very best like no one ever was 🎵.
In “The Great Animal Rescue”, each map has four challenges and comes with four Challenge Mementos. The first ten people to complete all of the Challenges on a given map can merge their four Challenge Mementos into a grand Award Map Memento.
Members who aren’t able to snag one of those three limited Award Map Mementos can still complete all three maps to combine the twelve Challenge Mementos into a grand Finish Line Memento.
Members who create either the Finish Line Memento or any of the three Award Map Mementos will be able to bid on special TV memorabilia and fan collectibles not available to other members, so you’ll really want to rescue those animals!
Why we chose this cause for our first charity event
Zoos aren’t just a way for millions of people to be entertained by poop-throwing monkeys or determined giraffes; though these are excellent pastimes, zoos primarily function as hubs for wildlife conservation and significant research that helps endangered species.
The Ukraine crisis has threatened the lives of both zoo animals and zookeepers, causing profound suffering in the name of a senseless war. Whether it’s a bear, a zebra, or a dog named Paul Anka, we believe these creatures deserve to be cared for and fed, and we want to do our part to help them and their humans survive.
