The Ultimate Stars Hollow Soundtrack: The Perfect Songs for Every Character
The Stars Hollow Mixtapes: Townie-inspired tunes for every Gilmore Girls fan!
Have you ever wondered what kind of playlists the characters of Gilmore Girls would create? We can be pretty certain that in Stars Hollow, mixtapes and mix cds run rampant amongst our favorite townies, touching on every genre from hard rock to show tunes. Sure, Lane is known for her love of classic & indie rock as the drummer for Hep Alien and Lorelai wanted to join The Bangles when she was young, but each main character has a distinct musical taste. There is something for every music fan in the series, and that’s the spirit in which we conceived of the Stars Hollow Mixtapes. We’ve built out playlists for 14 of the major Gilmore Girls characters—think of it as the ultimate soundtrack to your rewatch this fall. You can find all of them on our Remarkist Spotify profile, or by searching Stars Hollow Mixtapes.
Lorelai Gilmore
This playlist is inspired by 16 year old Lorelai Gilmore. From the Thompson Twins to The Bangles and INXS (original lead singer and all) – all the music is from 1984 or earlier. We can see Lorelai blasting this music from the old potting shed at the Independence Inn, her and little Rory dancing around the bathtub.
Rory Gilmore
On Rory’s playlist, we thought that she would be influenced by her mom (i.e. The Bangles) but also from her best friend, Lane Kim (i.e. Belle and Sebastian, Rilo Kiley). One thing for sure is that this playlist is best accompanied by a book and a cozy spot (or at least a study tree.)
Luke Danes
Luke’s playlist is full of classic rock, and music otherwise known as “dad rock.” Anything from the 70s & 80s belongs here. You’ll find everything from Styx to REO Speedwagon, and Bruce Springsteen, with an added bonus of Jimmy Buffett (Luke has just been to a few shows) and Steely Dan (only the best for flash mobs.) The number one rule though – No Journey. They freak Luke out.
Lane Kim
Lane’s musical tastes are the perfect combination of classic rock and indie pop/rock, and that is exactly what you will find here. There is no need to hide this one under your floorboards. Blast songs from The Clash and Led Zeppelin, followed by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Shins, and Sleater-Kinney. Round it out with some Fleetwood Mac, Lane’s guilty pleasure.
Paris Geller
This playlist is inspired by Paris, and one can expect it to be unapologetically bold, smart, and powerful. It’s full of female singers that are inspiring and a little intimidating – just like Paris. You’ll be ready to take on the world with this playlist with the likes of Beyoncé, Madonna, Aretha, and Alanis.
Dean Forester
This playlist is a must listen when you need the small town, all-American vibes to fill your day. Everything from Neil Young (because no one is cooler than Neil Young) to James Taylor, Ben Harper and John Mayer.
Jess Mariano
If you’re Team Jess, your music choices might be just as rebellious as our leather-jacket wearing friend. Put this Jess-inspired playlist on and rock out to The Ramones, Buzzcocks, and Elvis Costello. But true Jess fans know the jacket and lack of respect for authority aren’t his entire personality. Often misunderstood, Jess has a softer side–and you’ll find it reflected in this mix with some Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, and Elliott Smith.
Logan Huntzberger
Team Logan, you say? We have just the mix to get the party started. With this playlist, you will be out of your seat with “Moves Like Jagger.” It is full of party anthems, and songs fit for the next Life & Death Brigade stunt. You’ll be ready for any adventure, epic party, or night out with these songs.
Emily Gilmore
Are you having a dinner party and aren’t sure what music to play? Look no further than Emily Gilmore’s playlist. You’ll find the likes of Patti LuPone and Perry Como mixed with contemporary artists such as Norah Jones and Michael Bublé. For one night only, remember his name is Bill.
Richard Gilmore
Speaking of Bill, we mean, Richard – his playlist pairs well with Emily’s with a touch more of rock n roll. Richard Gilmore is a big Chuck Berry fan, so no playlist of his is without some “Johnny B. Goode.”
Sookie St. James
The playlist inspired by Sookie is fun, charming, and a little chaotic – just like her. She loves everything with a good beat, even if the lyrics are a little depressing. She would include some Creedence Clearwater Revival on the mix for her husband, Jackson, while she is definitely “Walking On Sunshine” all around the kitchen.
Kirk Gleason
The eclectic mix keeps going with Kirk’s playlist. He is coming around to being able to listen to “Bohemian Rhapsody” again after Mrs. Kim caused trauma for the Kirk Gleason Five. You definitely will be walking down the street with a pep in your step with these songs.
Miss Patty & Babette
The only playlist inspired by two characters, and it’s not surprising it is besties, Miss Patty and Babette. These two will be the life of the party and karaoke bar. We hope you are ready to belt out some show tunes! This mix is the perfect amount of over-the-top.
Michel Gerard
Last, but certainly not least, is Michel’s playlist. Or should we say tribute to the one and only Céline Dion? But that is not to say Michel wouldn’t listen to other divas. You have other powerful voices on here such as Barbra, Whitney, Mariah and Cher.
