Let's be honest: Italians are not the greatest at tv shows. We are so bad at it, in fact, that one of our most famous shows pokes fun at the very notion that italian television is simply not good. Add to that the risky route of a remake, and Odio il Natale (an italian TV show which is a remake of a norwegian one) doesn't seem to be a great idea.

Still, against all odds, it shines as a quality product not only for the italian viewer, but as something to captivate audiences all over the world!

The little tweaks to both the setting and the characters are what make the story so charming, highlighting the aspects of italian culture that define us while also showing off the enchanting view of the territory.

And so we find our lead Gianna roaming the streets of a gorgeous Chioggia (a little gem near Venice) by bicycle instead of using a sleigh as her norwegian counterpart. And we see her looking for love in a cooking class instead of a speed dating event. That is a very authentic depiction, not just a stereotype: Italians do love to center their social experiences around food!

But what really set Odio il Natale apart are Gianna's relationships outside of the romance aspect. Where the protagonist of the original series had a dear friend and the rest were coworkers more than anything else, Gianna has a full company of girl friends: a flatmate who is apparently cold and all business (she slightly remind us of Samantha from Sex and the city), a sweet café owner, and Gianna's sister who is not only a relative but a proper friend, well blended with the whole girls group. And I dare anyone not to tear up a little during one of Gianna's scenes with her dad, a man who supports his daughter no matter what.

This is all very relatable to Italians, but it's also part of a universal narrative where we all can find ourselves: love interests might come and go but true friends and family will always be there for us.

What are Remarkist Mementos?

Mementos are bite-sized pieces of collectible content in our Remarkist app. They look like digital badges with short authored commentary embedded within. Remarkist app members craft and drop limited edition sets to commemorate events in our fan-creator ecosystem.
This Memento Insight was taken from a Memento of the same name, and its written description was preserved exactly as it appears in the Memento. In some cases, that may include typos or formatting quirks which we consider part of the collectible work. There may still be editions of this Memento in our app. By claiming one, you become a micro-patron of this creator/author. To find the Memento, search their @membername or the event title in the Remarkist app. If all editions have been claimed, you can still support the creator by acquiring one of their other Mementos or tipping them in our KRNL token.

Not a Remarkist member? Here’s how to get started:

  • Step 1: Become a Remarkist early adopter and grab your unique @membername. Install our app from here, and be one of the earliest to collect our KRNL token while earning rates are high, including up to 650 KRNL to get you started. KRNL fuels Remarkist’s fandom economy of events and collectibles.

  • Step 2: Join our Remarkist Clubhouse Club—Clubhouse is a separate mobile app on iPhone and Android that we use right now to meet and watch content together. You’ll need it to actually join us for our real-time events, and you’ll need to be a member of our club there to see those chat rooms.

  • Step 3: Join our Discord Server—this is where hundreds of Remarkists are geeking out over the shows we love 24 hours a day, and it’s where you can get the latest developments on the project.

  • Step 4: Check out our website at remarkist.com for a splashy birds-eye view of the biggest stuff happening in our ecosystem.

  • Step 5: Subscribe to future magazine issues so you can stay up to date on all the exciting stuff coming to Remarkist in 2023, or share this with others who might be interested. Creativity is always best with friends!
