Körnels grow out of our time together
If you’ve been to a Remarkist event, you’ve no doubt heard someone at some point proclaim, “It’s time to harvest!” Or maybe you’ve heard mention of some strange thing called a kernel. What is it? What is harvesting? Why does it matter? Does it even? And if it does, how does one learn how to do it?
This post aims to break down our Körnel system (yes, we spell it a little differently than it sounds). After reading this, you should understand the ins and outs of Körnels (often abbreviated as KRNL) and be ready to “harvest” them too… if you so desire.
What is a Körnel?
It’s a game token. Like those little brassy tokens you get at a video game arcade when you feed in a dollar bill. Except we don’t get them from a token machine, we get them from Remarkist events. We get them by proving that we showed up to an event. That simple. The event is the token machine, but rather than feeding in a dollar, we feed it our interest, our time, and our participation. And just as physical arcade tokens represent our dollar bill to play games in the arcade, Körnels represent that interest, time, and participation—which, believe it or not, is pretty valuable to our project because in order for it to grow, its gonna need people who care enough to play. So if you give that part of yourself to Remarkist, in exchange, Remarkist gives you some tokens to play in our fandom arcade.
Pretty straightforward, right?
What can you do with a KRNL?
Well the project is young, so not a whole lot right now.
You can tip other members for their valuable insights and discussions during events.
Some hosts can accept KRNLs as a form of ticketing for special events with celebrity guest or to join those guests in group conversations.
They can be used to build digital collectibles to distribute at events. And they can be traded for those same digital collectibles.
They can be used in special Remarkist auctions for collectible prizes and signed fan memorabilia.
And our goal is for KRNLs to fuel an in-game economy as robust as a fan expo, providing access to meet and greets, content premieres, premium panels, and a marketplace of fan-made goods and content—a fandom bazaar in your pocket.
Harvesting KRNLs
I should actually clarify one thing. I said Körnels prove you were at an event. But that’s not completely accurate. Eventually, they will. One day, you’ll need to attend an event for the system to dole out KRNLs, but for now, it’s enough for you to simply be aware of when the event is happening. Even just that amount of care and consideration of the project is enough right now for Remarkist to reward you.
So let’s look at exactly what that means.
We call the earning of KRNLs Harvesting, and it’s a two-step process.
RSVPing to events
The first part of the process is RSVPing to an event. This is an easy one, right? Just like RSVPing to any event, this is just a polite way of telling Remarkist that you plan to attend this event (i.e. harvest from this event). You do so by tapping the little RSVP button at the top of an event page.
This step is critical and if you don’t do it, the system has no idea you want to harvest KRNLs from this event, so it won’t have any prepared for you. Kind of like if you don’t RSVP to a wedding you were invited to, you shouldn’t expect a table setting with your name on it.
You can also only RSVP for an event within 3 days of it starting. This is so that members don’t just RVSP willy nilly to every single event in the app. We want you to see what’s coming up in the next few days. Even if you aren’t able to actually attend, it’s important that you retain some of what is happening in the community.
You can also only RSVP up to an hour before the event starts. After that, the window is closed on harvesting for that particualr event. This is because… well, it’s kinda rude to RSVP less than an hour before an event. I mean, imagine RSVPing to a wedding less than an hour before. Heck, imagine RSVPing less than a day before! So I think we can agree an hour is pretty liberal.
Harvest an event
Once you’ve RSVPed to an event, you’ll notice a countdown clock appear in the same spot that the RSVP button was.
This is the system’s way of telling you it has planted a little KRNL seedling in anticipation of your attendance. The countdown shows how long until your seedling has fully grown and your KRNLs are ready to harvest. Spoiler: It’ll always be 15 minutes before the scheduled end of the event. At that point, the counter will be replaced by a little Harvest button for the next 30 minutes. Just tap that button to collect your KRNLs! Easy peasy!
However, if you don’t harvest within that 30-minute window, your KRNLs will wither away, and you’ll lose the chance to harvest for that event.
So there is some timing you have to get right because if you miss any of those RSVP or harvest windows, you’ll miss your chance, and in some cases, you’ll have wasted your time. So even though at this point, you don’t have to attend an event to harvest from it, it’s actually harder to do so. When you do attend an event, you’ll usually hear others reminding you when it’s time to harvest (those proclamations of “harvest time” we’ve all heard).
Why is my Harvest always different?
Something you’ll notice when you first start harvesting is that you rarely ever get the same amount from a harvest. There are a few reasons for this.
It’s slightly random
When you harvest real fruits—let’s say apples, cause I was recently in Germany and there were apple trees everywhere—no two are exactly the same. Sure, all the fruit from one tree will be pretty close to the same size, but if you measured each one, they wouldn’t be perfect duplicates of each other, would they? The same for harvests. They’ll be pretty close to the same amount for everyone, but they vary. Usually, that variation is slight, but occasionally, you’ll be surprised by some mutant apple that’s four times bigger than the rest. We call these Bountiful Harvests. They’re pretty rare. Usually, a harvest will only vary by a few KRNLs at the most between harvesters. And over time, everyone’s harvests should accumulate at the same rate.
Number of events
The number of events in a day will dramatically affect the amount of KRNLs each event will dole out. If we think of Remarkist as a garden area where we plant our KRNL seedlings, we have to consider that it’s only so large. This means every event is sharing the same area to plant their attendees’ KRNLs. It also means everyone’s harvests at each event will be smaller and smaller the more events are sharing that garden. However, if you harvest for every event in a day, you’ll have a larger total amount than you would if there was only one in the day. So more events in a day are actually better for active members.
Number of harvesters the day before
The more people harvest from Remarkist within a short period of time, the more exhausted the system will become and the smaller the harvests will be for the next group of harvesters. The system always looks at the number of people who harvested the day before across all events, and the higher that number is, the smaller the harvest will be for everyone that day. If the number of harvesters goes down again, the system will increase subsequent harvests.
Essentially, as Remarkist becomes more popular (i.e. more and more people harvesting daily), the system will release fewer and fewer KRNLs. And that should make sense, because as we said, KRNLs represent the value of your time, interest, and participation in the Remarkist project. In the beginning, when very few people believed in this project, you did. And so that dedication—at a time when there wasn’t much here except a dream—is highly rewarded. But years from now, when there is so much more use for KRNLs and the project is wildly popular and there are lots more it can give its members—like, who knows, maybe private meet and greets with influential artists or purchasing special edition collectibles—well at that point, the harvest rewards would be much lower because new members would be coming into an already popular system.
This is why a foundational community is so special, and it’s this particular part of the system that highly values and protects the time you put into this project at its birth and during its clumsy years of learning to walk.
And speaking of walking, the chicken did pass through here! Luckily, she went to the fro-yo social as planned and instead of wandering off with any predators, went to check out an exhibit on Women's Rights in the Early 20th Century! It's good for chicks to see themselves represented Properly in politics! Remarkist's top graduate knows this well, and she has something to commemorate that fact.
But there are other ways that early members can keep their harvests strong even as harvests are reduced for everyone. Our game system has lots of different ways to boost your KRNL earnings, and most of them favor early adoption.
Building a streak
The simplest way to boost your harvest rate is streak-building. The idea here is that holding a harvest streak for a long time comes with increasing multipliers to your harvest the longer you hold it. Those multipliers are the following:
7 days = x1.1
30 days = x1.2
91 days = x1.35
182 days = x1.5
365 days = x1.75
2 years = x2
So whatever your harvest rate would normally be on a given day, the system will multiply that by the amounts above depending on how many consecutive days you’ve harvested for an event as stated above.
For example, if most members with no streak would get around 2 KRNLs for a harvest, but I have a 2-year consecutive harvest streak, I’d get about 5 KRNLs.
Boosting in other ways
As our platform develops, members will discover all sorts of ways to boost their rates to help compensate for the dwindling harvests. Perhaps the most interactive is through a collectibles game we play called Mementos.
Mementos are digital collectibles with varying power and rarity. Extremely rare and powerful Mementos can be combined with other Mementos to boost your harvest in very dynamic ways.
But that’s for another series coming very soon where we’ll look at that Memento game and its special relationship to our KRNL System.
Until then, we hope this post has helped demystify our Körnel token and that you feel confident harvesting some for yourself!
Get started
If you’re new to Remarkist, and you’d like to start collecting our KRNL token:
Step 1: Add our app at remarkist.com—just go there on a mobile browser, and it’ll walk you through getting the app on your phone. You can also just go there on a normal browser and enjoy it through a laptop, desktop, or tablet. This is where you can see our calendar and RSVP to upcoming events.
Step 2: Join our Remarkist Clubhouse Club—Clubhouse is a separate mobile app on iPhone and Android that we use to meet over audio-chat during the content we watch. You’ll need it to actually join us for our real-time events, and you’ll need to be a member of our club there to see those chat rooms.
Step 3: Join our Discord Server—this is where hundreds of Remarkists are geeking out over the shows we love 24 hours a day, and it’s where you can get the latest developments on the project.
