Like a Game of Thrones viewer coming in at House of the Dragon, my tardiness to her sweeping narrative is only a matter of perspective from where we stand today. Because if you can imagine all the books yet to come, the dense chapters packed into each... then maybe I’m not so late after all. Either way, it's a good time to put stock into the words and journey of Taylor Swift.
I was introduced to evermore on a recent trip to Chicago-downloaded the last few songs of the deluxe edition to my Spotify as we were already floating above the runway. Much of the first half struck me as somber, lonely (a pandemic born work, I figured, since my only other acquaintance was with her newer Midnights and the classic Shake It Off). It was good take-off music, for sure. I find airplane cabins very lonely, even when it’s a full flight-especially so. Still, evermore didn’t totally grab me until a little over halfway through the album, starting with the tune ivy. All of the songs have a strong sense of place... but that one, in particular! It took me somewhere expansive yet mysterious-a place that might have answers if you were willing to put in the long search.
I listened to evermore several times-on the plane, in Chicago, on the return flight to Vegas, and lots more since I’ve been back. But admittedly, I’ve started most of my playthroughs with ivy. I know that would pain some fans to hear-those who love songs from the first half. And with recent, more conscientious (guilty) replays of the whole thing, I’ve fallen for several others (champagne problems, ‘tis the damn season, dorothea, coney island). But I keep coming back to ivy... searching through the blustery cold of that faith-forgotten land, with little more than this frienship bracelet to light my way. Maybe it can help light yours too.
