14 Fantastic AI Characters Made of Gilmore Girls
We fell down the AI rabbit hole of generative art and decided to place our Stars Hollow pro and deuteragonist inside other story franchises.
There’s an Instagram account with a guy who places a deepfake of Tom Cruise’s face on his own. You might have seen it. If you haven’t, you should. It’s eerie but pretty cool. And there’s a chatbot called ChatGPT that has sparked an AI tech race among competitors like Google and Baidu. We imagine Meta will develop something similar to help populate the metaverse in its early days.
Artificial Intelligence is certainly having its moment. But whether it's really momentary or gearing up to be a significant part of our world is still up for debate. In the meantime, a lot of us are having fun with it. Just ask members on our Discord server who spent a day asking a GPT bot there to write us all kinds of ridiculous–and in most cases, just dreadful–pieces of fiction. It inspired plenty of laughs, eyebrow raises, and eventually groans of dismay when we realized there was a trial limit on the number of requests we could make. “I should have budgeted my asks!!” 😭
Recently we stumbled on another AI system by OpenAI, the creators behind ChatGPT. It’s called Dall-E, and it’s a sort of a GPT of visuals. A neural network that creates art. Type a descriptive request for it to render a visual work, and what you’ll get might range from spot-on to just plain frightening.
We have a running joke at Remarkist about Gilmore Girls doing a crossover with Transformers, and as I’m sure you can imagine, it evolved into the concept of Lorelai herself being a Transformer in this conjured mash-up. So we wondered whether Dall-E could make our dreams come true. This started us on an AI adventure that we are pleased to present to you now, dear reader.
Enjoy.
More than meets the eye
The requests began pretty simply: “Lorelai Gilmore as a Transformer.” And this is the masterpiece that was produced.
Of course, we wondered if maybe a second request for something more photographic might be better.
Ummmmmm… that’s not bad. Not particularly good either. Unnerving. What is she holding? Is that an empty coffee pot?
Okay, maybe it was having trouble with one Gilmore Girl and might do better with two.
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore as Transformers.”
OMG! The horror! 😱
We will say, though, we’re impressed by the inclusion of Greystone in the background.
Should we make it clear that even as Transformers, these two Gilmores would likely be doing what Gilmores do best? We gave it a shot.
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore as Transformers drinking coffee.” ☕
Hmm… not sure about the little truck on the table or the… cranberry juice? But this is getting closer. How about we add the words “Realistic painting of…”
Maybe adding in the Gilmore season? 🍁 We modified it with “…in the autumn.”
At this point, we figured we’d cut our losses on Transformers. This was probably about as good as it was going to get with robots. We also decided Kirk was driving that taxi. 🚖
We moved on.
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore in Lord of the Rings”
Whoa! Now we’re talking! If you blink really fast while looking at this, tell us you don’t see Lorelai and Rory. And what are they holding? It looks like a folded sack. Food for their elevensies, amiright?!
This was the point when we really got into a groove with our AI artist.
We wondered what would happen if we shifted the fantasy a bit and took them to Westeros.
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore in Game of Thrones.”
Yes!!!!
Kind of…?
New genre!
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore in Stranger Things”
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore the Vampire Slayer”?
After that string of modest successes, we were feeling confident enough to try out some toons.
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore as Simpsons characters!”
¡Ay, caramba! 🛹
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore as Bob’s Burgers characters!!”
“Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore as Rick and Morty characters!!!”
It was all starting to get too overwhelming. Reality was bending and blurring, and ideas were coming to us faster than we could make sense of them. We had to take a break, but we would return soon enough. Little did we know what this Artificial mastermind had in store for us when we did.
Hogwarts, and Star Wars, and Marvel, oh my!
