Fan Favorite Duos: Pop Culture Halloween Costumes for Couples and Best Friends
Cosplay ideas for two!
We can find many reasons throughout the year to dress up to honor our favorite fandoms and engage in some good old fashioned cosplay. A trip to ComicCon, a fandom festival, Disney bounding and theme park visits, even a trip to the movies for an eventful screening is a reason to don a costume. But it’s spooky season, which means it’s almost Halloween! Which everyone knows is one of the best days of the year to join in on the fun.
This Halloween, we bring you the best costumes for partners in love, crime, and everything in between. You don’t have to be in a romantic relationship to put together a fantastic fandom duo getup either. Here are some of our ideas–but we’d love to hear yours in the comments!
Pfannee and ShenShen from Wicked
Glinda’s snarky besties are played by Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James in the film, and these actors bring a certain flair to the characters. Their costumes and accessories are so much fun, and dressing up like them is perfect for anyone who loves whimsy. Don your brightest pastels, go crazy with some fun prints and luxurious layers, put your hair in a wild updo and maybe grab a plastic wishbone to glue onto a pair of fake glasses. Be inseparable: Pfannee and ShenShen are never seen alone!
Mario and Luigi from Super Mario Bros.
A classic for a reason. This is a great last-minute option too if you’re invited to a last minute trick-or-treat! To make your own costume, you’ll just need some red and green t-shirts, blue overalls, fake mustaches (if you need them!), and matching caps that say M and L. You can use paper and markers to cut out the emblems if you’re really pressed for time. Some work boots complete the look! Don’t forget to carry (clean!) plungers as your main accessories.
Zack and Brian, Gilmore Girls
Real fans will know. If you’re going as Zack, a longish wig will do the trick if you don’t have what we can only describe as “lead guitarist hair.” Put on a band t-shirt, jeans, carry a guitar and a scowl. If you’re going as Brian, think indie-musician: you can put a cool tie over a collared button down and a sweater, grab a pair of glasses, and carry around a basket of wink-winkers (french fries). The best costumes come with a snack! If you want to really drive it home, find a Hep Alien band tee or other accessory like a sticker for your phone case.
Joyce Byers and Chief Hopper, Stranger Things
If you loved the 80s, you’re in luck. This couple costume is also great if you’re headed to a Halloween party at the last minute and don’t have much time to plan an outfit. For Joyce, you’ll need a regular pair of jeans, a faded tee or oversized button down shirt, non-fancy beat up sneakers and maybe a jean or corduroy jacket. The key is muted colors–nothing too bright. Extra points if you can dig out the Christmas lights a bit early and carry them as a prop or wear them draped over your shoulders. For Hopper, a mustache/goatee is the most important accessory in addition to a wide brim fedora. If you can’t find a beige button down and brown pants, throw on a plaid button down, jeans and boots for Hopper’s off-duty look.
Romy and Michele, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion
This movie is a late 90s cult classic (and a musical stage show is on the way) and the fashion is iconic. If you are a fan of Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan and/or Sabrina Carpenter and acquired something shiny to wear to a concert, you might already have an appropriate outfit with sequins, satin or feathers. To channel Romy and Michele, all you need is a shiny minidress in a bright color like pink or blue. Style your hair is sky high and go for 90s era pearlized, frosted lip gloss. A choker necklace and chunky high heels are musts. Make sure to carry around some Post-Its as a prop.
Chessy and Meredith, The Parent Trap
The ultimate opposites, Chessy and Meredith are the women of the 1998 film that lately get the most love (especially since Lisa Ann Walter appeared alongside Elaine Hendrix on Dancing With the Stars and the two revealed they’ve been close friends since the movie filmed). For Chessy, you’ll need to be casual: a rugged button down over a tank top and jeans or cargo pants, messy bun or hair down and sneakers will do. For Meredith, you’ll have to find the biggest hat you’ve ever worn to make the point. A fitted shift dress, heels, and your brightest red lipstick will finish the look. Carry a wine bottle with a Parker Knoll Vineyard label on it for Chessy and a cocktail in hand at all times for Meresdith.
Wednesday Addams and Enid Sinclair, Wednesday
You could go for outcast-boarding-school-uniform chic, but this might be more fun if you play up the characters’ affinities for opposite color schemes. Wednesday is never in any other color but black with some white or gray accents, while Enid embraces color, specifically shades of pink, blue, and purple, even in her hair. So get some non-permanent hair dye and go crazy. Wear your brightest colors with a big smile. Unless you’re going as Wednesday: in that case, try not to smile at all.
