The vampire had been here. The window was shattered, papers were strewn across the floor, drawers were open, and shelves were empty. But I knew instantly what it had come for. And I knew I was the only one who could get it back.

I rushed out of the library, adrenaline coursing through my veins. If I was quick, I could catch up to it. 

I dashed out onto the campus grounds. It was late and no one was around. The moon was full, casting eerie shadows over the landscape. I tuned my ears, quieted my thoughts, and listened for any sign of the vampire. 

In the distance, I heard a metal clang against metal. A trash can, knocked over. I knew exactly which way to go.

I ran off of the campus and into the city. The alleyways formed a twisted maze, but I didn’t care. I was focused on one thing: catching the vampire.

And then I saw it. A shadow, darting through the darkness. I pursued, and within minutes I was close on its heels.

The vampire knocked over more trash cans in an attempt to slow me down, but I leaped over them like an expert. I was gaining on it. 

It was only a matter of time before I’d catch up and be forced into a close-range fight with the vampire. But I knew I was more than ready for it.

I had been training for this moment for years. I knew its weaknesses, and I knew how to exploit them. I was going to get that book back, no matter what it took.
